The Travelling Celts

Hawaii Five o

by Michael Cameron

As part of our retirement trip we went to Hawaii.

Ambitious to see all 50 US States, and this being the most difficult to get to, but also keen to visit Pearl Harbour, site of the Japanese attack on December 7th 1941.

The day after we arrived we caught a local bus to the Pearl Harbour Memorial. Denise was amused by a 'wild' chicken she spotted near the bus stop. Pearl Harbour was relatively expensive, you had to pay for individual 'attractions'. The most sombre area was the memorial above the sunken battleship, the USS Arizona. It marks the resting place of 1102 sailors and marines of the 1177 killed on the Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbour.

It was quite a hot day, and we had to catch a motor launch to board the USS Arizona Memorial, alas over an hours wait in an unshaded queue was endured.

Before that we were able to board a submarine (USS Bowfin), Denise was also learning (much to my amusement) to take selfies with her phone. Later we took a tour of the Battleship (USS Missouri) where the Japanese signed Surrender documents to signify the end of WWII. And lastly we caught a shuttle to tour a transport museum.

Despite the expense, a worthwhile visit.
