Transylvanian Break

by Michael Cameron

Transylvania is a historical region which is located in central Romania. Bound on the east and south by its natural borders, the Carpathian mountain range, historical Transylvania extended westward to the Apuseni Mountains. The term sometimes encompasses not only Transylvania proper, but also parts of the historical regions of Crișana and Maramureș, and occasionally the Romanian part of Banat.

The region of Transylvania is known for the scenery of its Carpathian landscape and its rich history. It also contains major cities such as Cluj-Napoca, Brașov, Sibiu, Târgu Mureș, Alba Iulia, and Bistrița. It is of course also associated Transylvania vampires, thanks to the dominant influence of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula and the many films the tale inspired

And it was Denise's love of vampire novels and movies that inspired our sojourn to this beautifula area, and in hindsight lovely peoples and country. Our base was in the city of Sibiu, but our hosts took us to Dracula Haunts, Churches and Cathedrals, Country Parks, local produce markets, and treated us to Romanian Cooking (most we liked, some unlikely to try again)!

On arrival at Transylvania Airport we had to wait for the customs officer to get to the airport (ours being the only international flight that day) this warmed us up nicely to take Transylvania and its people as we found them, and to try and slow down time, it was lovely.
